A saga is defined as a “long story of heroic achievement.” For instance, the lifelong journey of a diehard disc golfer, playing in extreme weather, climbing through a thorny bramble to rescue a member of their plastic flock. Watching that disc roll, and roll, and roll. Nailing that impossible putt to best a best friend.
Here at School of Disc Golf SAGA is also an acronym that stands for Self-Administered Gap Analysis, a tool designed by disc golf author and instructor Jack “Tupp” Trageser to identify a player’s strengths and weaknesses. Disc golfers of all skill levels can use it to find both the quickest (low-hanging fruit) and the most significant (score-impacting) opportunities for improvement.
Jack created it initially while coaching Latvian FPO player Sintija Klezberga from afar, as a way to cover all bases quickly. She was training to compete in DGPT Elite events in the U.S. and they only had two months to prepare.
They used the SAGA test to establish a foundation, and it helped enormously. Since then other School of Disc Golf clients have found it revealing as well, so now we’re opening it up to the public.
Simply answer a wide-ranging list of questions about all aspects of your competitive disc golf play using a 1-5 rating system. No soul searching required!
can it help you play better disc golf?
If you act on the results, yes! Seeing your answers listed together will reveal with clarity the areas you need to address to get to your next level.
Score-wise, the best strategy for improvement is to tackle your costliest vulnerabilities (as paid in strokes) and those with the easiest and potentially most impactful fixes first. But to do that, you have to identify them!
Sometimes answering the questions on your own isn’t enough, though, and that’s where the “multidimensional” in SAGA test comes in.
“If you give yourself a 4 on one question and your friends all give you 2’s and 1’s, that there is a red flag, my friend.”
In addition to taking the test yourself, we advise you to also send the link to your buddies and have them complete the questionnaire about you. Their answers — especially the ones that surprise you — represent potential blind spots in your game that ought not to be ignored.
